Local Currency
The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TSH).
It is recommended to arrive in Tanzania with US dollars and exchange them at authorized currency exchange offices located throughout the major cities.
Please note: only US dollar bills printed after 2009 are accepted.
It is very important to exchange money only in official places — exchanging money on the black market is a serious criminal offense in Tanzania.
Transportation
Getting around Arusha
Within the city of Arusha, you can get around using motorcycles waiting on almost every street corner (“Piki Piki”).
The price depends on the distance, but usually costs about 1,000 shillings per person.
It is also safe to take a tuk-tuk (rickshaw) by waving one down or by using the BOLT app.
In Dar es Salaam, you can also use Uber.
From the Airport to Arusha
It is recommended to arrange a driver before your flight so they will be waiting when you land.
There is no organized taxi company outside Kilimanjaro Airport.
The cost is approximately 70,000 shillings (around $30 USD).
Payment can be made in dollars as well.
Tour Companies and Booking Attractions
Recommendations for safari and climbing companies change frequently.
We suggest joining traveler groups to receive updated reviews from other travelers.
Before booking any tour, it is very important to check reviews and confirm the company is reliable, as scams are common in this field.
It is customary to pay a deposit when booking, since the company must reserve accommodations or purchase park entry tickets.
The remaining balance is paid before departure — most companies require cash payment.
Safety and Security
Tanzanians generally love Israelis and Jews. There is no open antisemitism, and you can walk proudly with Jewish or religious symbols without fear.
During the day, Arusha is safe even for solo travelers, but you should protect your phone from motorcycle riders who may snatch it and drive away.
In villages, it is even safer because everyone knows each other.
At night, it is dangerous to walk around Arusha or other major cities on foot.
It is recommended to use a vehicle for transportation.
At Chabad House, we provide secure escort service after Friday night dinner to nearby accommodations (up to a 15-minute walk).
Laundry Services
Chabad House now offers a new self-service laundry option, including folding and ironing by appointment.
There is also a laundry service in the city that charges by weight:

Mikveh
At this time, there is no mikveh (ritual bath) available in Arusha. We are, with G-d’s help, actively working on establishing one in the near future.
In the meantime, immersion is possible in the hot springs in Moshi, or you may plan your trip to include immersion in the sea in Zanzibar.
We Are Here for You
We at Chabad House are here for any need.
You are welcome to come at any time during the day for a soft landing in the city — espresso, cakes, putting on tefillin, Torah classes, and a warm, home-like atmosphere.
We also handle emergency situations and stay in contact with the Israeli Embassy in Kenya (which is responsible for our region).
We assist insurance and rescue companies in locating travelers when needed.
Storage
You may store belongings for safekeeping free of charge.
